Essentials: Shoemaker for Moderator

Roger Who?

Hello, my name is Roger Shoemaker and I am a candidate for Moderator of the 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA for 2008 - 2010.

If elected as your Moderator, my primary goal is to be in dialogue with the congregations so each will have a better understanding of the other.  Our denomination, like a tree, grows from the roots up.  Our witness is like branches that grow from the tree.  Over the past ten or twelve years we have tried to trim the branches rather than feed the roots.  All of us need to have a common focus so that the end result is a strong healthy tree that represents the witness to our faith.

Living in the Heartland, my experience in the business world, along with my work over many years with the Presbyterian Church uniquely qualifies me to be your Moderator for the 218th General Assembly.

I have been blessed with a wide range of religious experience that continually gives me a fresh perspective, especially as a member of a congregation. I have served as Elder, Deacon, Trustee, on countless committees and programs (many times) in different Presbyterian churches.  This includes youth work, adult education and teaching,

I have served as Synod Commissioner and Vice Moderator.  My  Presbytery service includes being Commissioner, Vice Moderator and Moderator.  I have been an observer at General Assembly Council meetings and General Assembly.  I now serve as convener of the Czech mission network and have been the PC (USA) Representative at the Synodical gathering of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren.

My wide range of qualifications are detailed on the various pages of this web site.  After you reflect on what we can accomplish together, I would appreciate your support.

As I travel along the path to GA I learn more each day concerning the difficulties we face within the denomination.  It seems to me that it all started back in the 1950 era when amongst other things society gave in to the motto of Burger King. "Have it your way". This mentality may have even blossomed in the hippy era.  Of course this is not a new cultural. I believe it started with a garden story in Genesis and is later reflected by a small group of twelve. As I understand the pagans did what they wanted to do. The Hebrews had a set of hard and fast rules to follow. Then Jesus came along and said live by the rules if you must but you will not understand God's grace until love becomes the center of your belief and life. An example would be, if you feed someone who is hungry out of pity you get a gold star, but if you feed someone out of love you open the door to the kingdom for them and you have been a witness to God's presence in your life.
